BROOKLYN, CT - Janet (Place) Haines, age 80, died Thursday, Aug. 28 at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT. Janet was born in Newton, MA, Aug. 3, 1934, daughter of the late Minna (Merten) and H. Stanley Place. She grew up in Dennisport, MA, graduated from Barnstable High School, in Hyannis, MA, and earned her Bachelor's degree from Boston University, School of Education and graduate teaching certification through Eastern CT State University. Janet was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and friend. She married her husband, David, in South Dennis, MA in 1956, after they graduated together from Boston University. Her children are Scott living in Carlisle, PA, Diane in Eugene, OR and Jeffrey in Brooklyn, CT. She has four grandchildren, Harrison in Camp Hill, PA, and Jenna, Amanda and Zoran in Brooklyn, CT. She loved little children and spent twenty-six years teaching, twenty-three of which were in the 1st and 2nd grades in Windham Center School in Windham, CT. Janet retired in June, 1993. She loved traveling, musicals, the neighborhood kids, working with community agencies, (WAIM, Holy Family Shelter, Books-to-Dreams). She loved flowers and kept her own garden, played in St Paul's Recorder group, and with her favorite bridge group. She belonged to Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, The Society for Key Women Educators, and was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Windham, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Memorial Garden Fund at St. Paul's Church, P.O. Box 82, Windham, CT 06280, Windham Area Interfaith Ministry (WAIM), 866 Main St., Willimantic, CT 06226 or a charity of your choice. Service and reception will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, Sept. 4 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 27 Plains Road, Windham Center. There will not be any calling hours.
