Obituary

Jane Bernstein Baron, 89, passed away on October 27, 2026 in Naples, FL. She was married to Arnold Baron for 65 years at the time of her passing.

She was born in Willimantic, CT in 1937, and was the only child of the late Selina and William Bernstein, long time business owners and active community residents. Jane was the granddaughter of Sarah and Israel Bernstein and Hattie and Jacob Cohen. Jane was the niece of Celia Belman Rosow, Shirley Schrager, and I. Mayo Cohen, all of whom were long time Willimantic community members and civic leaders. She graduated from Windham High School in Willimantic, CT in 1954 and Mt. Ida College in Newton Centre, MA in 1957 where she made lifelong friends. Before marrying, Jane worked for Lawrence and Memorial Hospitals in New London, CT and later went back to work after raising her sons in South Carolina, first for the public library and then with the schools in Oconee County, including Seneca Middle School where she worked with special education children for many years.

Jane and Arnold were married on November 6, 1960 at the Hillel House on the campus of The University of Connecticut. Over their nearly 66 year marriage, they raised two sons and a work transfer brought the family to South Carolina in 1972. They retired to peaceful Marco Island, FL in 1994, traveling extensively across the US and abroad and hosting family and friends at their home overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. They were active at The Jewish Congregation of Marco Island (JCMI) where they prepared the Oneg Shabbat following Friday evening services each week for many years and Jane was a member and leader at the Marco chapter for the American Cancer Society’s support group.

She was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren: Dr. John Baron and wife Carol and their children Will, Sarah and Jake; and Jeff Baron and his husband Dr. Sean Robinson.

Jane is remembered for her humor and strength, and her commitment to her husband, Arnold.

She will be memorialized by the JCMI family at Shabbat worship on Friday, October 30th, and throughout the initial month of sh'loshim.

A graveside service will be led by Rabbi Jeremy Schwartz of Temple B’nai Israel of Willimantic, CT on Wednesday, November 4, 2026 at 11 am the Temple B’nai Israel Cemetary in Mansfield, CT. Family and friends will gather afterwards at the home of Jeff Baron in Willimantic.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Jewish Community of Marco Island, the American Cancer Society, or the Alzheimer’s Support Network of Naples, FL.
