Avery, Jane Weissman, 69, of Willimantic, CT, passed away peacefully on January 21st, 2016. She fought a nearly 5 yearlong battle against brain cancer with the utmost courage, dignity and humor. Jane was born on March 9th, 1946, in Frederick, MD, to Dr. Norman Weissman and Louise Brody Weissman. After subsequently moving to Queens, NY and Salt Lake City (SLC), UT, Jane attended high school at the Arnold School in Massachusetts. It is there that she met the love of her life, Dennis James Avery. They married at South of the Border, SC, in 1965 and welcomed their first child, Mandy, that same year. Lisa and Dionne followed in 1968 and 1977. Jane and Denny made their "forever" home in Willimantic in 1971. Jane loved her little town and those in it. She devoted her life to her family and was fiercely loving, loyal and protective. She was best friend to her husband of over 50 years, as well as to her three daughters. Jane was fun, silly, sassy and kind. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Norman Weissman, and beloved uncle, George Weissman. Jane is survived by her husband, Dennis Avery, of Willimantic, CT; Mandy Avery Risley and husband Patrick Risley of Columbia, CT; Lisa Jane Haglund and husband David Haglund of Tampa, FL; and Dionne Avery of Brooklyn, NY. Her four grandchildren, Alison Avery Risley, John (Jack) Dennis Risley, Cassidy Jane Haglund and Nylu Rose Avery Bernshtayn, will forever miss their adored "Mammy." Jane is also survived by: two brothers, David Weissman of SLC, UT, Eric Weissman of Bainbridge Island, WA, and her cherished aunt, Mildred Weissman, as well as a host of loving cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Victorio Te and his staff for their unwavering care. Jane's family would also like to thank Ruth Larson for her commitment to Jane in the last two years of her illness. She assisted Jane's primary caregiver, husband Dennis, who cared for his wife with devotion, tenderness and love. The family will receive friends and relatives 1:00 pm Friday, January 29, 2016 at Potter Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 pm. After the funeral service we will leave Potter Funeral Home to St. Joseph Cemetery for Burial.
