James Mitchell Obituary
James A. Mitchell, better known to us all as Jim, passed away unexpectedly on November 14, 2023, in Norwich, CT. Born in Willimantic on May 29, 1970, he lived an extraordinary life filled with laughter, love, and kindness. Known for his generosity, loving nature, and the ability to make anyone laugh, Jim was the life of every party. Jim relocated to Norwich in recent years, to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
Jim was the beloved son of John Lewis Mitchell and Vivian May Maynard Mitchell. Although he was predeceased by his father, John, sister Lisa Mitchell, brother John Mitchell, and many loved ones, it’s comforting to think of them now, reunited in the great beyond, sharing love and laughter. And knowing Jim, he's probably already got them in stitches with his latest punchline.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of love in his children, daughter Samantha Mitchell and Matthew Mitchell, son and best friend, his daughter-in-law, Evelisa Mitchell, who was like his own, and son-in-law Justin, father to his grandson. His grandchildren, Ramani Hendrickson, Cameron Gonzalez, Aleysia Godere, Lucas Mitchell, and Emy, will always have “Grandpa Jim’s” laughter ringing in their ears.
His mother, Vivian Mitchell, was the apple of his eye, and his siblings, Holly Mitchell-Neborsky, Dana Mitchell, sister-in-law Elaine Mitchell, sister-in-law Karen Mitchell, and his “Dumas siblings” will always remember their beloved brother. His nephew Josh Mitchell, who was like a brother to him, will keep the spirit of their bond alive, and he will miss Danielle along with the boys. Jim will forever watch over his nieces Alyssa Neborsky, Ashley Mitchell, Liz Strout, and nephews Nick Neborsky, "BJ" Mitchell, and Josh Strout. Jim's love extended to his many cousins, special friends, and all those who were fortunate to know him. Jim always had a special spot in his heart for Kevin, Keenan, and Cynthia, all who he loved like his own. He will be remembered fondly by his first true love and the mother of his children, Alexia Macht (aka Theta-Potatah).
Jim was a high school graduate who made a difference in various fields throughout his career. His last professional chapter was spent supporting individuals with traumatic brain injuries, a role he found both challenging and incredibly rewarding. No matter where he worked, Jim brought his unique blend of humor and compassion, creating an environment where laughter was the best medicine.
To know Jim was to love him. Jim had a big heart, although stubborn at times, and often wanting things his way, he always put others first, and made sure he showed them that he truly cared. Each person he crossed paths with, loved him for who he was. Jim was the comedian of our family, along with his sister Lisa who he is now reunited with. Jim was always a man that made sure his family was safe and protected, felt loved, and happy. Jim’s natural talent was making those around him experience a life of happiness and full of laughter.
In the end, it wasn't about how long Jim lived, but how he lived. And boy, did he live. He filled his years with laughter, love, and kindness, spreading joy wherever he went. He was a comedian, a son, a brother, a father, a grandfather, a friend, and so much more. His spirit will live on in the stories we tell, the jokes we share, and the love we carry in our hearts.
Jim’s family sends sincere gratitude to his medical team at Backus Cancer Institute/ AMC. We also thank the team at Boston Medical Center Amyloidosis center for educating, and providing insight to Jim, son, and family on ways to manage and support him during this unexpected health journey.
Jim’s final moments here on earth, consisted of visiting his mother, and connecting with his grandchildren, to tell them that he loved them. Jim did what he loved most. He will forever be missed.
