Dr. Jack Meister Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that the family of Dr. Jack A. Meister, 91, of Hampton, CT announces his passing on Wednesday, November 2, 2022. He was born on December 24, 1930 in Meriden, CT, the son of the late Ernest and Mary (Karolshak) Meister. He was the last of the three sons to pass.
Jack was a graduate of Meriden High School, class of 1949 and Wilcox Tech winning the “Manufacturers Award” for being top of his class. In 1950, Jack enrolled in the horseshoeing course at Michigan State, graduating with the highest honors ever received, learning from a five-time world champion. He traveled the country shoeing horses in 40 states before attending veterinary school at Michigan State. Jack graduated in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree and his veterinary degree in 1957.
In 1958, Jack met the love of his life, best friend, and right hand, “Dawn”. They had a wonderful 64-year marriage working side by side at their vet hospital in Meriden while raising three children, Duska, John, and Bill. They moved to Hampton, CT in 1971 to raise their children in the country and to build his second hospital. Jack loved living on his farm raising his animals, having a huge garden, and taking time to fly his airplanes. He loved to “take a spin” around after work.
In 1984, he sold his practice and was asked to be a veterinarian for the Iditarod in Alaska because he could fly from checkpoint to checkpoint, running a practice there for the summer. When he returned to Connecticut, he went horseshoeing with his son for several years teaching him the art of shoeing.
In 1987, he took a job at the University of Connecticut as a livestock superintendent, teaching and overseeing the care of all the animals. Following that job, he was the State Veterinarian and Epidemiologist until 1997.
In his retirement, Jack stayed busier than ever, wondering how he ever had the time to work. He spent time in Florida in the winter and enjoyed his grandchildren and friends whenever possible. He always loved to stop at the farm and see the animals and talk about his veterinary stories.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn; son John and wife Kirby of Topsham, VT; son Bill and wife Laura of Hampton, CT; son in law Neal Waite of Chaplin, CT; four grandchildren Cole, Hannah, Ben, and Jess; five great grandchildren Austin, Connor, Derek, Emily, and Elly; three nieces and ten nephews. Jack was predeceased by his brothers Ernie and Earl; daughter Duska; and granddaughter Elizabeth.
Jack’s services will be private.
