J. Russell Thompson

J. Russell Thompson, 89, of Andover, husband of the late Dorothy (Jones) Thompson, died Tuesday Aug. 17, 2004 at the Douglas Manor in Windham. He was born Feb. 6, 1915 in Andover the son of Herbert and Ada (Walker) Thompson. A lifelong resident, Russell was active in Andover politics, including serving two terms as First Selectman. He was a charter member of the Andover Volunteer Fire Dept., serving many years as Assistant Chief and for four years as Chief. Russell had 40 years of service with the Society for Savings in Hartford, retiring as Vice President. He had been a member of Uriel Lodge AF & AM, in Merrow, for over 60 years. He joined the First Congregational Church of Andover in 1927 and has been a continuous active member. He is survived by his daughter, Beverly J. Ganley of Milford, N.J., 2 sons, Richard W. Thompson and his wife Rebecca of Harpswell, ME. and James R. Thompson Jr. and his wife Karen of Columbia; 6 grandchildren, Joanne Thompson, William Thompson, John Ganley Jr., Ailene Nash, Ashley Thompson and Jordan Thompson; and a great granddaughter, Kaitlyn Nash. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic on Monday from 1:00pm to 2:00pm prior to a 2:00pm funeral home service with the Rev. Linda Higgins officiating. Burial will follow in the Townsend Cemetery, Andover. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorial donations to either the Andover Volunteer Fire Dept, or the First Congregational Church of Andover, Andover, CT. 06232.
