Howard R. Marks, 92, of Pinney Hill Rd., Willington, died Thursday Nov. 22, 2001 at the Rockville General Hospital following a fire at his home. He was born Oct. 9, 1909 in W. Hartford the son of Thomas and Mary (Smith) Marks. Mr. Marks was a resident of Meriden on E. Main street for several years until 1956. He owned and operated with his late wife, Blanche (Lowe) Marks, Brad s Grocery on Rte. 32 in the Merrow section of Mansfield from 1956 to 1971. He also operated a rubbish removal business serving the towns of Mansfield, Willington and Ashford until he retired at the age of 75. In 1939, he and his brother Francis crossed the country in a mule drawn covered wagon in an advertising campaign, covering a period of 4 years and 35,000 miles. He was a loving compassionate man who will be dearly missed. He is survived by 2 sons Austin Marks Sr. and his wife Betty of Denver, CO. and Clifton Marks of Norwich, 4 sisters; Harriet, Marion, Gertrude and Edna, 3 grandchildren; Austin Marks Jr. of Columbia, Lisa Ann Richard of Newington and Nicole Ann Mercado of Willington, 2 great grandchildren; Christopher Marks and Kelsi Marks both of Columbia. He was predeceased by a son Bradley. His family will receive friends at the Potter F.H. 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00pm. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00am at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Willington Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorial donations to Willington Hill Fire Dept., 24 Old Farms Rd., Willington, Ct. 06279, or to the Willington Fire Dept. #1, 426 River Rd., Willington, Ct. 06279 or to the North Central Hospice, 8 Keynote Dr., Vernon, Ct. 06066.
