Herminia Mercado Obituary
Herminia Mercado, 96, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2025, in Monroe, North Carolina.

Born on August 20, 1928, in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, Herminia's vibrant spirit and warm heart touched all who knew her. She married Antonio Mercado on August 1, 1946, in Luquillo, and together they celebrated 56 years of marriage. They moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and spent many years there before settling in Willimantic, Connecticut, where they lived for over 30 years.

She was employed in textile manufacturing, skillfully sewing bedspreads. Her sewing and crocheting talents were unmatched, as evidenced by the beautiful dresses, skirts, and doilies she created in her own time. In addition, she spent many years as a devoted caregiver for children.

At home, Herminia was the undisputed queen of the kitchen. She delighted in preparing home-cooked meals for her family, ensuring that no one ever left the table hungry. Beyond her culinary talents, she adored plants and had an unbelievable green thumb. In her later years, she was discovered to be quite the formidable opponent in dominoes and card games.

Herminia's love for wrestling was well-known among her loved ones. Watching WWE was one of her favorite pastimes, and she could often be found cheering on her favorite wrestlers with the same passion she brought to every aspect of her life.

Described as spunky and spirited, Herminia’s humor and zest for life were infectious. Her faith was a guiding force, providing her with lifelong strength and comfort. She attended church regularly and found great joy in her spiritual community.

As we say goodbye, we celebrate the remarkable woman she was and the countless lives she enriched.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Antonio; her son, Eddie Mercado; and her daughter, Edelmira Cruz.   She is survived by her children, Antonio Mercado, Jr, Marie Ruiz, Ruben Mercado, and Rose Carmichael, along with her 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Herminia will be laid to rest on

Monday, February 24 , 2025.
