Herbert Getter, Ph.D., known fondly to friends and family as Herb, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2024, at the age of 91. He was born on March 16, 1933, in the Bronx, New York. Herb was a man of exceptional wit and compassion, whose life was characterized by his unwavering dedication to his family, his love for education, and his enjoyment of life's simple pleasures.
Herb's journey began as a bright young man from New York where he received his Bachelor’s degree from City College and his Masters and Ph.D. at Ohio State University, a testament to his dedication and passion for the field of psychology. His academic pursuits culminated in a distinguished career as a Professor of Psychology at the University of Connecticut, where he played a major role in the development and success of the mental health clinic. He inspired countless students over the years with his insight and wisdom.
Beyond his professional achievements, Herb's life was anchored by his beloved wife of 68 years, Phyllis Getter. Together, they built a family founded on love, laughter, and mutual respect. Herb was a devoted father to his three daughters, Lynne Galili and her husband Benny, Karen Glaun and her husband Asher, and Liz Trudeau and her husband Bob. His role as a grandfather to his seven grandchildren, Jessica Ritchie and her husband Brandon, Daniel Glaun, Adina Galili, Lindsay Murphy and her husband Jason, Amory Galili, Natan Glaun, and Matthew Trudeau, brought him immeasurable joy. His three great-grandchildren, Lukas, Josey, and Riley were a source of pride and happiness in his later years. Herb is also remembered fondly by his nieces and nephews, who were a cherished part of his life. He was predeceased by his mother and father along with his four siblings who will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved them.
Herb's life was enriched by his cherished friendships, including his beloved caretaker and friend, Dianna Gahimer, who stood by him with unwavering support and kindness. His relationships were a reflection of his loving, funny, and selfless nature, qualities that drew people to him and made them feel valued and loved. Sports were a passion for Herb, who could often be found on the tennis courts or cheering on his favorite UConn Basketball, football, and soccer teams. Through these interests, Herb connected with many friends, sharing both victories and losses with equal grace and humor. Herb's legacy is one of love, laughter, and selflessness.
