North Windham

Herbert W. Burnham, 99, of North Windham, CT, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026,

Herb was born on June 11, 1926, and lived a long and fulfilling life. He grew up on Burnham Hill at his family’s farm, where he learned firsthand how to “live off the land.” He cared deeply for the land—growing crops, raising cattle and sheep, heating the old farmhouse with wood from the farm’s acreage, and maintaining all the equipment required to do so. A hard worker by nature, Herb did not take a break until the job was done.

He attended Windham Technical School for auto repair and was later hired by Roy Motors in Willimantic. He worked there until being drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater repairing military vehicles. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Roy Motors and remained there when the business was purchased by Bunnell Buick. Several years later, Herb was hired by the Connecticut State Police, Troop D, where he served as troop mechanic until his retirement in 1992.

Herb met his wife, Anna Uusitalo of Canterbury, CT, while attending square dances in Mansfield. They married in 1950 and made their home at the family homestead, where they raised their two children, Herbert Jr. and Lynn.

Herb and Anna developed a strong interest in Suffolk sheep and showed at many events throughout New England and at the Big E. Their daughter Lynn showed Southdowns, and later their grandchildren also participated in showing. The Burnhams were life members of the New England Sheep and Wool Growers Association, the Connecticut Sheep Breeders Association, and the New England Suffolk Association, and they also led a 4-H Sheep Club. They were also avid fans of the UCONN Huskies and would typically name their sheep after basketball players.

Herb was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Windham Fire Department, where he served as Fire Chief for several years.

Herbert was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Anna. He is survived by his son, Herbert Jr., and his wife, Nancy, of West Dover, VT; his daughter, Lynn, and her husband, John Aubrey, of Leesburg, FL; his grandsons, Jesse and his wife, Gina, of Ashford, and Kevin and his wife, Alyssa Languth, of Hampton; and his grandchild, Shannon Doyle, of Scotland. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Anna and Henry of Ashford, and Max and Maya of Hampton, as well as nieces, a nephew, and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

The Burnham family extends their sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff at Douglas Manor for the compassionate and skilled care they provided to Herb in his later years. They also wish to thank his longtime friend and neighbor, Debra Clausson, for her devoted care, her comforting presence, and for being by his side during his final moments.

At Herb’s request, there will be no calling hours or services. His ashes will be spread at a later time on the family farm.
