Helen B. Newcombe, age 89 went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 31st after a prolonged illness. She was born Helen Elizabeth Bishop to Ambrose and Adeline Bishop on August 15, 1916 on St. Joseph's Island, Canada. After receiving her degree in nursing, she moved to Bates Road in Chaplin, Connecticut with her late husband Dr. Richard V. Newcombe. She was an active member of the community serving as a member of the Chaplin Congregational Church and the North Windham Congregational Church where she taught Sunday School. Her fellowship with the P.E.O. Sisterhood was a source of great joy and her love for the natural beauty of her world found a fulfillment through her membership in the Mansfield Garden Gate Club. She was also a volunteer for Planned Parenthood and was a member of Chaplin's Planning and Zoning and Zoning Committees in the 1970's She was blessed with two sons, Richard Vaughan Newcombe II of Windham Center and Glen Bishop Newcombe of Hampton and two daughters Beverly Newcombe Woodcock of Hampden, Maine and Carolyn Jean Newcombe of Storrs. She also leaves 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. She was predeceased by one brother. A memorial service will be held at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Rte. 195, Willimantic on Wednesday, January 4 at 10:00 A.M. Kindly omit flowers.
