Heinz Herrmann

Heinz Herrmann, 98, of Storrs, died Saturday Oct. 18, 2009. After completing the study of medicine and a research assistantship in biochemistry the University of Vienna and postdoctoral training in Copenhagen, he arrived in the U.S. in 1939. He first carried out research in ophthalmology, in part connected with W.W.2 at the Johns Hopkins Medical School before starting his studies of embryonic development , first at Yale and the University of Colorado Medical School, transfering his work to the University of Connecticut in 1959 with the tenure of a research professorship of the American Cancer Society. During this time, he was for ten years director of the Institute of Cell Biology and served on two study sections of the National Institute of Health. He participated in the foundation of the American Society of Cell Biology and was for one semester NATO Professor at the University of Milan. In 1974 he received the Alumni Award for excellence in research. After his retirement in 1980, he wrote a textbook of Cell Biology and a book about the nature of understanding complex systems and was a volunteer at the UConn Library. He is survived by his wife Virginia and daughter Lisa. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday Oct. 23rd at 3:00pm at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic.
