Harriet McGraw Sornberger died Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at home. Her family was with her. Mrs. Sornberger was born on August 3, 1920 in Cortland, New York. She was a 1942 graduate of Mount Holyoke College where she majored in art, and was president of her class. She and her husband, Dr. Charles Sornberger were married on October 31, 1942. They lived in Boston, Massachusetts, Jacksonville, Florida and Cortland, New York before settling in Scotland, Connecticut in 1957. Mrs. Sornberger s parents, Dr. Willis and Mrs. Elizabeth McGraw, her brother Cameron McGraw, and her sisters Martha Wadman and Margaret McGraw predeceased her. She is survived by her husband, her daughters Ann Racy and Susan Cole, her son John Sornberger, her son-in-law Dr. Anis Racy, her daughter-in-law Lisa Sornberger, and her grandchildren Justin and Jeremy Cole, and Eric and Layla Racy, and her granddaughters-in-law Jamie Cole and Carina DeFazio. Mrs. Sornberger had a quick wit and a keen sense of humor. She was gracious and kind, she had many friends, and she gave her full attention to whomever she was with. She had a variety of interests, including cooking, reading, music, travel, art and she especially loved being with friends and family. She worked as a volunteer in many community programs, and she supported the arts, education and programs for social justice. She was a passionate gardener. In the nearly fifty years that she and her husband lived in their home, she created beautiful woodland, rock, perennial and annual gardens that have brought pleasure to many. She especially loved delphiniums. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 8, 2006 between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. at Pudding Hill Farm, 426 Pudding Hill Road, (Rte. 97) Scotland, Connecticut. Family and friends will plant her garden this spring, and there will be a memorial service to celebrate her life this summer when her garden is in bloom. The memorial service for her and her husband will be June 17, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hampton Congregational Church, Main Street, Hampton. A picnic and tour of Bonnet's Gardens at Pudding Hill Farm, 426 Pudding Hill Rd., (Rte. 97) Scotland will follow the memorial service.
