Hadley Philipp Johnson, 78 , of Pomfret, husband of Elizabeth C. Johnson, died Friday Feb. 25, 2005 at the UMass Medical Center, Worcester, after a brief illness. He was born in Willimantic on Nov. 2, 1926 the son of the late Carl and Hattie Johnson of North Franklin. Hadley was a veteran of W.W.2 serving in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Harris from 1944 to 1946. He was in three Pacific Theater campaigns, Leyte, Lingayen and Okinawa; and earned the following commendations, the American Theater Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with three stars, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two stars. Upon returning home, Hadley had an early career in textile manufacturing. In 1953, he began a rubbish removal company. Among his accomplishments, he introduced recycling and automated collection services to eastern Connecticut. In 1965, the H.C. Fryer Trucking Co. of Willimantic was purchased, allowing for the expansion to household and office moving, store delivery, freight distribution and general trucking throughout the state. He retired in 1976. Hadley s primary interests after retirement were his family, gardening, fishing and traveling throughout New England. Hadley was predeceased by brothers Albin, Ernest, Verne and Melvin; sisters Grace Abrahamson, Vera Edwards and Dorothy Gorman; and his eldest son Donald. In addition to his wife Elizabeth of 56 years, Hadley is survived by a sister Clara Hopkins of Preston, 3 sons and their spouses, Colin and Ellen of Niantic, Marc and Cynthia of Plainfield and Eric and Jennifer of Pomfret; 3 daughters and their spouses, Carla Johnson and Bob Kimble of Mansfield, Rebecca and Michael Collins of Canterbury and Pamela and John Lewerenz of Pomfret. He also leaves 13 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. His Memorial service will be held at the Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic on Saturday March 5, 2005 at 1:00pm. There are no calling hours.
