Grace (Hayes) Lougee

Grace Hayes Lougee, age 97, of Storrs, CT passed away on Monday, August 20th, at Windham Hospital in Willimantic, CT. A native of West Bridgewater, MA, Grace was the daughter of John Hayes and Margaret Hayes (Murphy), and the youngest of their eight children. She attended local schools in West Bridgewater as well as Bridgewater State College. Grace married her husband, Robert W. Lougee, on October 24, 1941 - they were married for 77 years and had lived in Storrs since 1949 when her husband joined the faculty at the University of Connecticut. A devoted full-time wife and mother, Grace worked on occasion as a part-time school teacher in the 1950s. She was also active in various social functions at the University for many years in connection with her husband?s tenure as a professor, department head and dean. In addition, Grace had a passion for sports, including competitive basketball in her youth, and later as a regular figure skater and swimmer ? especially at her summer home in Quonochontaug, RI. She also enjoyed socializing with friends through her weekly bridge club. Besides her husband, Grace is survived by her two children, Lorraine Lougee of Bethesda, MD and Robert W. Lougee, Jr. and his wife Mary of Hopkinton, MA, four grandchildren, Loren Guertin (Thom), Robert W. Lougee III (Rachel), Jennifer Morris (Nick) and John Gabriel Schneider (Yue Wu), six great-grandchildren (Grace, Haley, Carly, Zachary, Leah and Taylor), as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other family members and friends. Grace is preceded in death by her second son, John Marsh Lougee, who died at age 6 in 1963, her four sisters, Margaret, Esther, Rita, and Mary, and three brothers, John, Thomas and Clarence. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, August 25th, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 46 North Eagleville Road, Storrs, CT. A private burial will follow at nearby Storrs Cemetery.
