Gordon B. Allan

April 22, 1917 — June 20, 2014

Gordon B. Allan ,97, of Mansfield, passed away on June 20, 2014. He was a lifelong educator, a selfless volunteer for many caring organizations, a gentleman, and to those who knew him well a "character". Born in Cambridge Mass and raised in West Medford, Gordon graduated from Medford High School as class valedictorian. He completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard, followed by 2 post-graduate degrees. He began his educational career in Winchendon, MA. as a teacher. He met a fellow teacher there (Yvonne) who would soon become his wife of 63 years. His teaching concentrated on Printing, French, and Career Education. Later, as a teacher at Belmont JHS, as a huge railroad buff, he would form the Railroad Club. From there, the club ventured out to various places such as Washington D.C., New York City, the White Mountains and other destinations. Other activities included being a camp counselor at Camp Zakelo in Harrison Maine, as well as a lifelong philatelist. After 19 years as a teacher, in 1957 Gordon began his new challenges as a school superintendent for various school districts. He began in Barre, MA. , followed by career moves to Mansfield CT, Timberlane Regional in Plaistow, NH, and Nipmuc Regional in Mendon/Upton MA. Upon retiring from the educational field, Gordon began a new career working for CT Bank & Trust, first as a teller, then as a personal banker, assisting seniors with their banking needs. He was with CBT for 15 years. Gordon was a member of many helping community organizations, also serving on school committees in Medford, MA, and Mansfield, CT. He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, Phi Beta Kappa, and his favorite, Lions Club of Mansfield, CT. He was a tireless volunteer to the Lions, performing many duties, and devoting many long hours on both the Lions Club newsletter, and fundraising for Camp Rising Sun. Gordon was predeceased by his loving wife Yvonne M. (Labastie) Allan. He is survived by his sons Richard G. Allan and wife Carolyn (Kitty), Glenn S. Allan and wife Paula, Curtis R. (Sandy) Allan, grand children Alexander and wife Melody, Erica Allan, and 5 great grandchildren. There will be a private graveside ceremony for family members at a future date.
