Glenn Devine Obituary
Glenn Robert Devine passed away peacefully on November 7th, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 54 years, Jacqueline “Jackie” Devine, his children, Jennichelle Oatman and Justin Devine, his son-in-law, Robert Oatman, and daughter-in-law, Threasa Devine. Glenn was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren: Harrison, Patrick, and Amelia Oatman, and Tristin and Addison Devine. He is also survived by his brother, Wayne Devine, his sister, Beverly “Annie” Norris, and brother-in-law, Rick Norris, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who were close to his heart. Glenn was predeceased by his father, Thomas Devine, mother, Lena Devine, and his brother, Lawrence Devine.

Glenn grew up in South Windham, Connecticut, and was a 1966 graduate of Windham Technical School. Shortly after beginning his career with the U.S. Postal Service in Willimantic, CT, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Glenn served honorably in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970 with the 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, where he was awarded a Bronze Star for acts of heroism in combat, an Air Medal for meritorious combat flight operations, along with other commendations recognizing his dedication and bravery. After returning home, Glenn resumed his career with the U.S. Postal Service, where he became the youngest Postmaster in the country, leading the South Windham Post Office. He went on to serve as Postmaster in North Windham and Canterbury and retired in 2004 after 37 years of dedicated service.

In his later years, Glenn bravely faced the challenges of Parkinson’s disease, which was attributed to his exposure to Agent Orange during his service in Vietnam. The illness tested him physically, but Glenn’s resilient spirit remained unshaken. He met each day with quiet strength, setting an example of courage and perseverance for his family and friends. Despite the limitations Parkinson’s imposed, he continued to embrace life’s moments fully, focusing on the love and joy he found in his family and community.

Throughout his life Glenn loved spending time with his wife, Jackie, family, and friends, but above all, he cherished his time with his grandchildren and was never shy about sharing their many accomplishments. He took joy in attending their activities—track meets, music performances, and Veterans Day events at their school—and spent countless happy hours taking the little ones to parks and playgrounds. Before his illness, Glenn loved running with friends on their Sunday morning runs and competing in summer Monday night races at Windham High School. He enjoyed biking, wallyball, visiting family and friends in Florida, reading, and photography. He loved his football teams the Cleveland Browns and the Tennessee Volunteers, “Go Vol’s!”.

Glenn’s kindness, dedication, and quiet humor made him our beloved friend and "go-to-guy”. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family will receive family and friends to the calling hours set for Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 10:00am to 11:30 am at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson Street, Willimantic, CT.  A Funeral Service will follow at the funeral home at 11:30am.  Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, Club Road, Windham, CT after the funeral service.
