Gladys Tucker

Gladys Tucker, of 11 Eastwood Road, Storrs Mansfield, Connecticut, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on May 21, 2009. She was born on May 10, 1932 in Brooklyn, New York to Julius and Fay Lipschutz (Kromberg). Gladys grew up in Brooklyn, New York where she met her husband Edwin Tucker, also a Brooklyn resident, when she was 16. They married four years later in 1952. After her marriage, Gladys took a leave of absence from New York University where she was majoring in accounting. They moved to Denver where Edwin was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base. While living in Denver she was employed as the Assistant Cashier at the Denver Office of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company. Gladys and Edwin returned to Brooklyn. Here she gave birth to her two children, Sherwin and Pamela. For eight years Gladys and her husband lived in Brooklyn. In 1963 the family moved to Mansfield Center. In 1965 they moved to Storrs. In 1965 Gladys resumed her college studies at Willimantic State College, now known as Eastern Connecticut State University. She enrolled in the College's Elementary Education program. In recognition of her academic achievement she was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor education society. Gladys received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1970. Among the community activities she engaged in were Den Mother for the Mansfield Chapter of the Cub Scouts; the University of Connecticut League, having served two terms as president; and devoted a great deal of time to the Barter Box, which was operated by the League, (the Barter Box offered persons the opportunity to buy and sell slightly worn clothing.) For many years Gladys served as the League's Program Chair. While a member of the University of Connecticut League's Nutmeg Investment Club she served two terms as a Senior Partner. She was a member of the Auxiliary of the Windham Community Memorial Hospital. Gladys served as an incorporator of the Windham Community Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed landscaping. Gladys was a member of the Garden Gate Club, a Jorgensen Co-Star, a long-time Benton Museum docent, and a member of the AAUW. Gladys took special joy when she performed marriage ceremonies as a Justice of the Peace in Mansfield. She took great pleasure in attending Goodspeed Opera House productions, performances of the Connecticut Opera, offerings of the Hartford Symphony's "Conversations Series" & "Connection Series," Hartford Stage, and Theatre Works. Gladys was an avid fan of UConn Men's and Women's Basketball, holding season tickets and attending games in Storrs and Hartford. She is survived by her husband Edwin of Storrs and her two children and grandchildren. Gladys' son Sherwin and his wife Elaine reside in East Granby, Connecticut. They have four children, Jillian, Alyson, Brandon and Molly. Gladys' daughter Pamela, resides in Manhattan. Gladys was an extraordinary woman with a captivating smile. She quickly made friends wherever she went. She enjoyed life and took pleasure in working with and helping people. Gladys kept a gracious home which she enjoyed sharing with her friends. Her menus had a special touch. She paid attention to details. Gladys was always eager to try new dishes. She doted over her garden. For her, second best was never enough. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Sunday, May 24, 2009 at Temple Bnai Israel, 345 Jackson Street, Willimantic, CT.
