Gladys W. Chalmers

Gladys (Williamson) Chalmers, 99, of Columbia, widow of Harry T. Chalmers, died Friday July 11, 2003 at St. Joseph Living Center in Windham. She was born Dec. 7, 1903 in Norwich the daughter of Edwin and Julia Williamson. Gladys worked for the Southern New England Telephone Co. for 22 years, nine years in Norwich where she was the Asst. Chief Operator and 13 years in Putnam as Chief Operator. Following her marriage she moved to Willimantic where she lived for many years and later moved to Columbia. She was a member of the Windham Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer, a member of the Willimantic Women's Club and the Retiree's Social Club of Columbia. She is survived by her step daughter Elizabeth C. Lowell and her husband Walter A. of N. Windham, 4 grandchildren; Cynthia L. Gay and her husband Robert of Kudjoe Key, FL., Duston Lowell and his wife Susan of Chapel Hill, N.C., Betsy DeLoof Kleinberg and her husband Jon of Manchester and Thomas Lowell and his wife Lisa of Orlando, FL., 12 great granddaughters; Jocelyn, Carrie and Mollie Gay, Allison, Julianne and Hadley Lowell, Jennifer DeLoof and Briana, Kelsie, Ashlin, Mackensie and Riley Lowell, 2 sisters; Helen Redding of Wethersfield and Marion Sullivan of Norwich and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 4 brothers; Edward, John, Richard and Robert Williamson. There are no calling hours. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00am at St. Columba Church, intersection of Rte 87 and Rte 66 in Columbia. Burial will be at 1:30 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Norwich. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests memorial donations to St. Columba Church, 328 Rte 66, Columbia, Ct. 06237 or to St. Joseph Living Center, 14 Club Rd., Windham, Ct. 06280.
