Gilbert W. Armitage, 67, of Westford Hill Rd., Ashford, husband of Charlene (Saltonstall) Armitage died Thursday May 2, 2002 in Hartford. He was born April 8, 1935 in Ashford, son of the late Nathan and Lima (Wheeler) Armitage. He was a retired carpenter and had previously been a dairy farmer and lumberman. Gil was a member of the Westford Congregational Church for over 50 years and served as the senior elder until is death, he had been a Sunday school teacher and a choir member. He served in the United States Marine Corps, as first selectman for the town of Ashford, served on the Republican Town Committee and represented the committee and the town of Ashford at the state primaries. He was a past member of the Ashford Volunteer Fire Department and a long time member of the Ashford Babcock Band. He spent countless hours helping others and especially enjoyed the numerous Saturdays spent at the ?Health Club?, cutting, loading and delivering firewood to many church families. He will long be remembered for his sense of humor and the way he would get down on the level of a child in order to listen to what they what they had to say. He is survived by three children and their spouses, Arminda and LTC Roy Kamphausen of Virginia, Timothy Gilbert Armitage and Amy-lyn and Alan Arel of Ashford, six grandchildren, Alyssa Arel, Albert Arel, Abigail Kamphausen, Aidden Arel, Hudson Kamphausen and Andrea Arel. He leaves a sister, Martha Clark of Eastford and a loving mother-in-law, Cay Perry of Storrs, countless family and friends. He was predeceased by a brother, John ?Bud? Armitage and nephew John Armitage, both of Ashford. His family will receive friends at the Westford Congregational Church, Ashford on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Celebration service will be at the church on Monday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the Westford Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westford Congregational Church, 360 Westford Hill Rd, Ashford, CT 06278 or to the Ashford Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O.Box 1, Ashford, CT 06278.
