On April 19, 2013, a brave soldier, Gibson Clinton Porter, 92, of Willimantic, formerly of Columbia and Hebron, passed on to join his dearly departed wife, Elsie Nyberg Porter and his two sons, Gibson Carter Porter and Edward Lennart Porter. He was born on September 14, 1920, the son of the late Robert and Viola Porter. He is survived by his daughter-in-laws, Margaret Porter of Coral Springs, Florida and Donna Porter of Knoxville, Tennessee; his three grandsons, Derek Porter and his fiancAC.e Raquel Coutinho of Chicopee, Massachusetts, Scott Porter and his wife Julie (Zimmer) Porter of Knoxville, Tennessee and their two children, Kelly and Michael; and Justin Porter of Willimantic. He leaves behind his brother Milton Porter of Hebron and his two sisters, Roberta (Porter) DeGray and her husband Bruce DeGray of Hebron and Virginia Hutchinson of Canyon Lake, Texas; many cousins, nieces and nephews, close friends Hank Dupuis, Susan Crowther, Frances Anthony and numerous other dear friends. Gibson proudly served in World War II in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of Corporal, Tech 5 and received the Bronze Star Medal for bravery. He retired from the American Thread Company in Willimantic as a dispatcher and supervisor of truck drivers. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 95 in Hebron, where he served as Senior Vice Commander and Sergeant of Arms and was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 1724 in Willimantic. He enjoyed bowling, playing pool, helping neighbors with landscaping and loved going to classic car shows. Relatives and friends are invited to a graveside service with military honors on Saturday May 11, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Church Cemetery, Route 85, Hebron. There will be no calling hours.
