Gertrude Houser Lamb, of Storrs-Mansfield, CT who was born July 30, 1918 in a log cabin in Basin, Montana to Melvin A. Houser and Hilma V. Houser, died March 15, 2015, at Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Storrs, CT. An avid sports fan, Trudy announced in November 1986, that she had been waiting her whole life for the Red Sox to break the curse and win the World Series. She also closely followed all sports U Conn. She held degrees from Radcliffe, Boston University, and Case Western University. She taught several years in the Department of Government and International Relations of the University of Connecticut. After achieving her PhD degree from Case Western University in 1971, she pioneered the field of Clinical Librarianship beginning at the University of Missouri, then went on to develop a distinguished career at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Hartford Hospital. In 1980 she was elected President of the Medical Library Association and later was awarded the Association's highest award, the Marcia C. Noyes Award which "recognizes a career which has resulted in lasting, outstanding contributions to health sciences." Prior to her retirement in 1992 she was chosen as a Fellow of the Medical Library Assoc. Internationally recognized for her professional achievements, Trudy made substantial contributions to the Storrs community as well. She was a long time member of the Storrs Congregational Church including terms on the Finance Board and President of Women's Fellowship. She was a founding member of Joshua's Tract Conservation and Historic Trust, also a member of the Mansfield Historical Society. Always a warm and welcoming leader, she also was active in the Women's Club of Storrs, and the League of Women Voters. Gertrude is survived by her sister Ruth McGinnis, a niece Victoria O'Leary and nephews Steven and Scott McGinnis. She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband John Hall Lamb and her nephew John McGinnis. Most recently Gertrude was blessed by the care provided by Gladys Rychling, April Holinko, Terri Stephenson, and Ruth Bolduc. Friends and family also wish to express their thanks to the staff of Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation and the Hospice staff of Hartford Health Care at Home, Mansfield. A memorial service to celebrate Gertrude's life will be held Saturday, April 18th 2015 at 10:30 a.m.at Storrs Congregational Church, Storrs, CT and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the Storrs Congregational Church in her memory.
