Gerald Vernon Obituary
Gerald Lee Vernon, known affectionately as Jerry to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2024, at the age of 76 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, CT. Born on November 14, 1947, in Willimantic, CT. Jerry was the proud son of the late James A Vernon, and Clara P Terlecki-Vernon. Though his brother David Vernon and both parents preceded him in death, Jerry’s legacy continues through his surviving family members. His sister Julie Vernon, his daughters Laurie Lamot and Leslie Rooke, sister in-law Linda Vernon, along with two nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that will forever cherish his memory.
Jerry had a passion for service and a dedication to his country, which was evident in his early career as a helicopter mechanic in the US Navy. He received a National Defence Service Medal and a Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. His love for working with his hands transitioned into a Welder and Deep Sea Diver.
Throughout his life, Jerry found solace and joy at the beach, where the rhythm of the waves and the warmth of the sun provided him with a sense of peace. Jerry shared his love for the water with his children, teaching them to appreciate the simple joys of life, like smiles and laughter his children and sister had while going horseback riding and roller skating in Coventry CT.
Jerry was a familiar face at the Willimantic American Legion and VFW, where he enjoyed listening in the lively conversations and playing a round of scat with his brother David, sister in-law Linda and fellow patrons.
Jerry was a man whose generous actions spoke volumes about his character. Described by those who knew him as loving, kind, and gentle, he approached life with a softness that drew people to him.
As we bid farewell to Gerald Lee Vernon, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved. Jerry's legacy will live on through the memories he created, the lives he touched, and the love he shared.
The family would like to give thanks to Aija Pelletier and the Willimantic Veterans Affairs for the care and kindness they showed Jerry over the years of his life.
A private service will be held to honor Jerry's life.
