Obituary

George Winters passed away at home with family members in attendance on May 31, 2026 after a long illness.

He was born in Chicago, IL on June 29, 1944 to the late Clyde and Ada (Black) Winters. He joined the Navy in 1961 and served 4 years, the last 2 aboard the attack carrier, USS Forestal. After leaving the service he married Jean (Schlagentweith) and they soon moved to the Willimantic area. After a brief stay at a manufacturing plant, he applied for a job at the Willimantic Police Department. He worked there for approximately nine years and became the photographer II in 1972 and Photographer ltl in 1973 for various investigations. He later applied for a job at Electric Boat as a welder. He was the first certified welder to be able to weld in the nuclear power plant. After working at EB for over 12 years, he applied for a job as a civil servant at the U.S. Submarine Base in New London. He worked in later years at the Power Plant at the subbase and finally retired. He had received recognition for excellent performance numerous times.

These were his daytime jobs, but his calling came in the form of a volunteer in the Lebanon Fire Department as a volunteer. He even studied to become an Emergency Medical Technician with the Lebanon Fire Department in 1975. It was evident that his true passion was in service to those in need.

A Memorial Services will be held on June 29, 2026 at 11:00am at the First Congregational Church of Lebanon, 588 Exeter Road, Lebanon, CT 06249.

In their retirement years, they enjoyed camping with the grandchildren and were members of several camping groups, FMCA, Good Sam, along with several assorted state chapters. In lieu of Flowers, you can donate to the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department.
