George Sawutz

Storrs, CT. George Sawutz formerly of Finger Street, Saugerties, NY passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2002 at Windham Hospital, Willimantic, CT. Born February 10, 1926 in Maynard, MA, he was the son of the late Jacob and Mary Sawutz, and brother to Evelyn Sawutz. Raised in Maynard, MA he was a graduate of Bordentown Military Institute, Bordentown, NJ. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New Jersey Institute of Technology, completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1950, he married the former Jeanne Frances Talbot of Glen Ridge, NJ. He was employed at Westinghouse in Newark NJ. In 1957, they moved to Saugerties, NY where he was employed with Ferroxcube, a division of North American Philips, Eindhoven, Holland for 33 years. He was a member of the Saugerties United Methodist Church and was treasurer for 31 years. A free and accepted Mason, he was a member of Ulster Lodge No. 193,A. F. & A.M., Saugerties, NY. He was secretary for 18 years. Together he and his wife, Jeanne, raised three children, Dr. David G. Sawutz of Red Bank, NJ, Mrs. John D'Agostino of Mansfield, MA (Linda Sawutz D'Agostino) and Dr. Sandra S. Hill of Storrs-Mansfield, CT. They lived in Saugerties, NY for 43 years and moved to Storrs, CT 4 years ago. They recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Jeanne T. Sawutz, three children, two sons-in-laws, John O. D'Agostino and Dr. James D. Hill, five grandchildren: John and Jacob D'Agostino, Kylie, Austin and Allyson Hill, a dear sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Alan Gast of Cincinnati, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. Viewing hours will be held at Potter Funeral Home, Willimantic, CT on Friday, November 29, 2002 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted by the Reverend Valerie Roberts-Toler and held on Saturday, November 30, 2002, 10:00 am, at the First United Methodist Church, Mansfield, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of George Sawutz to Shriner's Springfield Hospital 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
