George J. Quirk, 91, of Ashford, beloved husband of Evelyn O. (Ferreira) Quirk, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010 in Rocky Hill from cancer. George was born in 1919 in Jersey City, NJ, the son of William A. Quirk and Helen (Twomey) Quirk of Jersey City, NJ. He served in the United States Army as a Master Sergeant during World War II. During his tour of duty in British Guinea, South America, he met and married his wife Evelyn and they lived in Jersey City after the war. During his time in Jersey City he was employed as a police officer and a corrections officer for young boys. George loved baseball, played softball for many years and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees. In 1955 he decided to move to the country and spent the rest of his life in Ashford where he started the first Little League. He was employed by the Liquor Control Commission, the University of Connecticut and Mansfield State Training School. George was involved in politics throughout his life, serving on the Connecticut State Assembly in Hartford, as First Selectman for the Town of Ashford and as a member of numerous town committees. In addition to his loving wife of 67 years, he is survived by two sons, William M. Quirk of Eastford, George J. Quirk and his wife Norma of Ashford and daughter Pat Phaneuf, also of Ashford, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Anne Alape of Willimantic and Dorothy Boisvert and her husband Larry of North Windham, a brother, Robert Quirk of Sarasota, FL, several nieces and nephews. His family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Rte. 195, Willimantic. Funeral services and burial with military honors will be on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Philip Cemetery, Rte. 44, Ashford.
