George Stephen Cherkes

May 11, 1946 — August 14, 2015

George ("Georgie") Cherkes passed away on Friday, August 14, 2015 at the age of 69. George was surrounded by family at the time of his passing, which followed a perfect day full of love, peace, his favorite music, recounting of old stories, and festive toasts in his honor. George was born in New York, New York, the city he loved, on May 11, 1946 to the late Edward and Mary (Toth) Cherkes with whom he is now reunited. He leaves his two daughters Liat Cherkes Bishko (and son-in-law Christopher Bishko), Alexa Cherkes (and Thomas Crawford) and grandchildren Annabelle Zoe, Hunter Thomas, William Brooks and Nathanial Tyler. George is also survived by his cousin Joseph Toth (and his wife Lisa Toth) who was a very dear friend and much like a brother to him, brother Edward Cherkes, brother Eugene Fiteni (and sister-in-law Sandra), sister Marion (Fiteni) Vandermark (and late brother-in-law Eugene "Whitey" Vandermark), Uncle George Tomecko, many beloved nieces and nephews, as well as his former wives, family and friends. George grew up in Rogers and Storrs, Connecticut where he attended E. O. Smith High School before receiving a B.A. from Connecticut College and an M.A. in special education from Central Connecticut State University. George was a member of the United States Armed Services and served in the Vietnam War. After serving, George worked in a variety of positions: as a director of social activities for international visiting professionals in New York City; as a special educator for the Tolland Public Schools; as co-owner of both Cup O' Sun restaurant and Mike's Stand; and as a landscaper at Creative Exteriors. More than these details can describe, George was larger than life and made a strong impression on everybody he met. He was truly the "life of the party". A fantastic dinner companion. Strong. Uncannily perceptive. A world-class practical joker. He loved fast cars, the Stafford Springs Speedway and his old '57 Chevy and MGC GT. He connected with others immediately. He loved to laugh, cook, eat and drink. He had a kind core and boundless wisdom. He felt deeply and intensely. George loved his family and friends and was lovingly cared for by many during his final weeks and days. His family thanks them all for their compassion and generous spirit. Funeral services will be held at St. Philip the Apostle Church in Ashford, Connecticut on August 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Maple View Health & Rehabilitation Center Recreation Fund.
