Genevieve Wood

January 29, 1919 — March 15, 2002

Genevieve (McShea) Wood, 83, passed away unexpectedly this week at home at 21 Ballamahack Rd. She was born on January 29, 1919 at the St. Joseph Hospital on Jackson St. in Willimantic, the eldest child of John F. McShea and Mary Jane (Meikle) McShea of Mansfield. Genevieve was a proud graduate of Windham High School class of 1936. Most of her life was spent as a homemaker, along with several positions in local retail and office work. In 1940 she married Robert H. Wood of Windham Center and had three sons who survive her: Robert P. Wood of Pomfret Center, John F. Wood of Pomfret Center and James M. Wood of Lisbon. Genevieve is also survived by eight grandchildren: Colin, Patrick, Elizabeth, John, Lisa, Andrew, Timothy and Jessica. Many nieces and nephews also mourn her passing. Surviving siblings include James McShea of Bolton, Patrick McShea of Columbia, MS, Patricia (McShea) Luft of Mansfield, Margaret (McShea) Smolak of Newington and Mary (McShea) Podolak of Bristol. She was predeceased by her brother John McShea of Cobalt, her sister Helen (McShea) Smith of Windham and by her twin brother John, who died shortly after birth. Genevieve was an active member of several area social clubs including the Irish-American Club, the Senior Citizen?s Club and the Single?s Club. She also was a lifelong communicant of St. Joseph Church in Willimantic. Another facet of her life included a fervid interest in the efforts of the UCONN Women?s Basketball Team. While fiercely independent, she thoroughly enjoyed and valued the company of her family and friends. Donations in her memory may be made to the Windham Center Volunteer Fire Dept., Windham Ct. 06280. Her family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. Willimantic on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. There will be a gathering at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. prior to the procession to her 11:00 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Church, 99 Jackson St. Willimantic. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Windham.
