Fred Holt, Jr. Obituary
Fred W. Holt, Jr. of South Windham, CT, passed away on February 14, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Fred was born on July 26, 1938, in Worcester, MA. The son of Fred W. Holt, Sr. and Evelyn (Miller) Holt, Fred grew up in Holden, MA and graduated from Wachusett Regional High School in 1956. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts University, College of Engineering, in Medford MA. Fred was enrolled in ROTC and upon graduation in 1960 served at the Naval Station, Newport, RI, where he met his wife Maureen, after asking a guard on duty to get her name and number. That would prove to be the best move he ever made as they were married for 60 wonderful years. Fred and Maureen settled down in Windham, CT where Fred was employed by Connecticut Light and Power (now Eversource) in 1962. Fred became general manager of the Willimantic region and retired after 30 years. This allowed Fred and Maureen to spend many years traveling, and doing what they enjoyed the most, spending time with their four grandchildren and family. Fred, known by his family as Poppi, most enjoyed time at their summer cottage in Wareham, MA exploring restaurants, reading on the deck, and enjoying a brewski at his favorite pubs. One of Fred’s favorite pastimes was watching UConn basketball, while texting about the game with his longtime friend, Bea.
Fred leaves behind his loving wife, Maureen (Murphy), two children, Kathy, and her husband John Reid, of Tolland, CT and Stephen Holt and his wife, Jennifer, of Marlborough, MA along with four incredible grandchildren, Reagan and Joshua Reid, and Isabella and Alexander Holt. Fred also leaves behind his sister, Kathleen Holt of South Hadley, MA, his sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his mother and father.
Fred’s family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, February 26, 2024 from 9:00am until his service at 11:00am at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. Willimantic with a burial immediately following at St. Joseph’s cemetery on Club Rd. Windham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity that warmed Fred’s heart, the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, Ashford CT.
