Florence Harakaly

Florence Mae (Currier) Harakaly, of Ashford, passed peacefully in her home early Wednesday morning Aug. 4, 2004. The daughter of Napoleon Joseph & Margaret Currier, Florence was born on Jan. 24, 1921 in Glover, VT, where she lived until her teens, when she moved to Woodstock CT. Here she met and her late husband Stephen to whom she was married for 62 years. Together they owned and operated a large poultry and cattle farm in Ashford, where they raised a family of seven children. After farming until the mid 60's she and her husband opened Steve's Gun Shop, which they managed together until they retired. At this point they proudly sold the main portions of their farm to two nonprofit organizations, both of which benefit children. One hundred and twenty acres going to the Boy Scouts of America 's Camp Webster in Ashford, and 300 acres going to Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. Florence lived a wonderful life after retiring, traveling around the country with her husband for twenty years. She was also always willing to help others in need whenever possible. She enjoyed tag sales, trips to the Casino, and the company of her beloved little dog Rosie. She is survived by six of her children and their spouses Stephen & Mary Harakaly III of Chaplin, CT., Sherry Lohnes, of Jupiter, Fl., Theodore & Maggie Harakaly of Woodstock, CT., Nancy Varga of Shinglehouse, PA. George Harakaly of Ashford, CT, and Charles & Laura Harakaly of Eastford, CT. She was predeceased by her daughter and son in law Phylis & James Lynch of Charleston, RI, and a granddaughter Laura Harakaly Oja. Florence, will be sorely missed by all her loving children, a large extended family of over 80 grand and great grand children, and friends. A graveside service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday 08/07/2004 at the Woodward Cemetery on Rt.44 in Ashford. There will be no calling hours.
