F. Louise Lent

Florence Louise Mead Lent, "Lou" passed on peacefully at her home on Sunday March 20, 2011 at the age of 95. She was greatly beloved by all who knew her. Lou was born on September 23rd 1915 in New Canaan Connecticut, daughter of the late Judge Benjamin H. Mead and Ivy Comstock Mead. She was raised in New Canaan and Stamford Connecticut. She attended Gray Court School for Girls and Stamford High School. She graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Agriculture in 1937 with a degree in Animal Husbandry. Lou and her twin sister, the late Bet Weed, brought the first student car to the Storrs Campus. She also brought the first horses to the university campus. Upon graduation she worked as a Girl Scout professional in Philadelphia Pa. In 1940 she married her college sweetheart Joseph M. Lent. The couple lived in Lambertville New Jersey and New Milford CT. Subsequently they moved to Storrs upon Joseph's securing a professorial position in the University of Connecticut's Plant Science Department. Lou lived in Storrs for 64 years. Much of this time she was very active in politics. She served as Mansfield's Republican Town Committee Chairman. She was the Registrar of Voters and a Justice of the Peace. She was a member of Mansfield's Zoning Board of Appeals. Lou was an active member of the 1st Church of Christ, Scientist for over 60 years .She was a member of Mansfield's Historical Society and a docent at the Connecticut Natural History Museum. She was an avid UConn Huskies Fan! Lou is survived by her sister, Faith Mead Bishop, a son Joseph Anton Lent "Tony", 2 daughters, Ivy Louise Plis and Linda Mead Keane, 6 grand children, 4 great grand children and a cherished black cat "Scampy". She was predeceased by her husband Joseph M. Lent, her twin sister Esther Elizabeth Weed "Bet" and 2 brothers Benjamin Heath Mead and Frank Comstock Mead. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in memory of Florence Louise Mead Lent for purposes designated by the Joseph M. Lent Plant Science Scholarship.
