Evelyn C. Smith

May 21, 1919 — March 2, 2016

Evelyn Clara (Colburn) Smith of North Windham passed away peacefully on March 2, 2016 at Windham Community Memorial Hospital. She was born to the late William and Edith (Brooke) Colburn of Coventry. Evelyn and her husband, Arthur (Smitty) Smith, made their home in North Windham where they ran their business, Smith's Oil Service, for many years. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, Evelyn's life was richly blessed by the births of her children, William and Karen, and she enjoyed many happy and special times with her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Family, friends and neighbors loved her sense of humor, endless wisdom, thoughtfulness, generosity and kind heart. She liked to travel and enjoyed many trips to Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire with her husband. She loved camping and visits to the ocean where she would collect sea glass and shells as she walked along the beach. In later years, she would take many bus trips with senior groups and especially loved seeing the Rockettes perform at Christmas time. Evelyn took great pleasure in reading a good book, watching ice skating on television and whipping up batches of her famous treats to share with family and friends. She was quick to laugh, slow to anger and had a way of making everyone around her feel special and loved. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Evelyn has been reunited in heaven with her husband, son and daughter, brothers, Herbert and Roland Colburn, and a special aunt, Adella Colburn. She is survived by her grandchildren, James (Dyane) Smith of Woodstock, Evelyn Barbeau of Putnam, Wendy (Chris) Thayer of Franconia, New Hampshire, Heather (Mark) Wingate of New Durham, New Hampshire, brother Everett (Bud) Colburn of Willimantic, sister Carolyn Kristoff of Boonville, New York, 13 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to Dr. Michael Kilgannon and to everyone at St. Joseph Living Center for their dedication and many acts of kindness shown to Evelyn and her family over the past years. A private burial and memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Evelyn's honor to St. Joseph Living Center, 14 Club Road, Windham, CT 06280, would be appreciated.
