Evelyn Newhall Smeland, 91, of Brooklyn, formerly of Willimantic, widow of Alfred Smeland, died Thursday May 1, 2003 at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam. She was born January 27, 1912 in Newark, NJ, the daughter of the late William and Edna (Smith) Newhall. She was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and American Screw Company on West Main Street in Willimantic. After her retirement she spent many years in Sebring and Boca Raton, Florida before returning to Connecticut. Mrs. Smeland was actively involved with volunteer work for the American Red Cross and was devoted to her faith. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Gwen Cross of Lebanon, a cousin, Laura Lomo of Goshen, NY, 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Cross of Colorado, Matthew Cross of Lebanon, Patrick Cross of San Diego, CA, Heather Reddy and her husband Chris of Mansfield and a great granddaughter, Hunter Lynn McKinney. She was predeceased by 2 brothers, William and Herbert Newhall. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Route 195, Willimantic.
