Evelyn "Evie" Burdick

Evelyn "Evie" Burdick, 91, of South Windham, died Thursday, April 22, 2010 at her home. She was born the daughter of Rufus and Lennie (Wilson) Rood on June 8, 1918 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Willimantic. She attended Natchaug School and Windham High School, class of 1936. Evie graduated from Willimantic State Teachers College in 1940 with a Bachelor of Education degree. For her first three years she taught in North Coventry in one room schools where she was teacher, nurse and janitor. She built the fires and cleaned, used lamps for light and had a latrine out back. During the war in 1941 she distributed food stamps. Evie was a member of the Windham Home Economics Club and the South Windham Fire Department Auxiliary. She belonged to the Windham and Tolland Retired Teachers, the Association of Retired Teachers of Connecticut and Chapter 3625 of the AARP. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Willimantic for 78 years. She was a member of the Club of the Open Door as a teenager and later taught Sunday School, was a member of the Missions Society, the Camp Committee, the Ladies Society, the Mother's Circle and the Bell Choir. Evie served as a Deacon, helping prepare the Communion Table and working church suppers. Her greatest interest however was the Girl Scouts. She joined the scouts at eleven years old and remained a member the rest of her life. Troop 1 was the church troop and she was the leader for 37 years, running a two week camp at Camp Wabbaquassett and helped form a brownie troop at the Oaks School, the Windham Center School and a junior troop in Windham Center. She attended two national conventions as a delegate, one in Miami Beach and one in St. Louis. She also took her Girl Scout troop to Washington D.C. for a four day trip. She is survived by a daughter Suzanne Roberson of Willimantic , a grandson Michael Roberson of Willimantic, a sister Madelyn Thompson and her husband Maurice of Storrs, twenty nieces and nephews, three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Zeigler of Hobe Sound, FL, Dorothy Heise of Haddam and Dorothy Rood of Clifton Park, NY and two close friends, Florence Palmer of Mansfield and Marion McAllister of Manchester. She was predeceased by a sister, Caroline, two brothers, Frank and James and a sister-in-law, Irma Rood. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Willimantic, 199 Valley St. Willimantic, CT. 06226. Burial will be private in New Willimantic Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to First Congregational Church of Willimantic, or First Congregational Church Camp or the CT Trails Girl Scout Council, 313 East St., Plainville, CT 06062.
