Eugene Fisher

October 20, 1930 — February 9, 2017

Eugene Fisher, 86, of Scotland, CT, passed away on February 9, 2017 at home. He was born in Hartford, CT on October 20, 1930 to Russell and Victorine Fisher. On November 8, 1952, Gene married Elaine Almquist, and the couple resided in Scotland for their entire life together. In Gene?s senior year in high school, he was a member of the 1948 undefeated Windham High School baseball team. He accumulated a batting average over 400, only striking out once. Over the course of his life, Gene collected a number of titles establishing himself as an active member in the town?s community. He was a lifetime charter member of the Scotland Volunteer Fire Department, also serving ten years as Assistant Chief. Gene was the last living charter member of the fire department, marking the end of an era. Gene was a longtime coach in the WYO baseball league, and was also able to coach both his son and grandsons. Gene and his father bought the general store in Scotland in 1946, owning and operating the Fisher General Store until 1983. He joined the United States Postal Service in 1957 as a clerk for his father, who was Postmaster at the time. In 1970, after his father?s retirement, he stepped into the role as the town?s Postmaster. He retired from this position in 1988. In 1986, Gene took on the task of numbering all the houses and lots in the town of Scotland to ensure that fire, police, and medical assistance could respond to an emergency situation as rapidly as possible. This is known as Enhanced 911. He was also an active member of Roy?s Boys, which organized in 2004 and played at the Oaks Grove ball field in the 1940?s. In addition to his lifelong devotion to his wife Elaine and his family, Gene?s favorite past times always came back to sports. He loved baseball and the Boston Red Sox. He was a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers and UCONN basketball. Gene also enjoyed spending time playing golf on the links. He was also fortunate enough to achieve a hole in one. Gene?s young at heart attitude carried him through some challenging times, but he was always able to find a way to tell a joke, make someone smile, or share with someone an affectionate wink. His strength allowed him to be supportive of those closest to him during some very difficult life passages. He was predeceased by his son Michael Robert Fisher and Mike?s wife, Lori Fisher. Gene is survived by his wife Elaine, his daughter Susan Fisher of Nantucket, MA. He also leaves four grandchildren, Steven, William, Michael and Christopher, as well as eight great-grandchildren. Gene always gave special thanks to his caregivers, Niccoletta and Jesse Gifford and Linda Spoerl, who allowed him to stay at the home he loved. There will be no calling hours and the burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Scotland Fire Department, P.O.
