Esther Masterson McCabe March 16, 1918 - July 5, 2009 Esther McCabe went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 5, 2009 at the Mansfield Center For Nursing and Rehabilitation with her family at her side. Dr. McCabe had been a resident of Storrs since 1969. She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and had lived in New York City before moving to Connecticut in 1959. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas McCabe, and son, Vincent McCabe. She is survived by her daughter Teri McCabe Retana "Lois", two grandchildren Stephanie and Megan Retana, who will miss their Grandmother McCabe. She is also survived by son Thomas McCabe, brother Dr. Thomas Masterson, sister Judith Prunier, niece Anne Masterson, and many other nieces, nephews, friends, colleagues and former students. Dr. McCabe was a professor at the University of Connecticut for 20 years before retiring in 1989. Prior to joining the staff at UCONN, she had been on the faculty of Hunter College, and had taught at Columbia University, both in New York City. She had also been an editor of Parents Magazine, and had worked at Colgate Palmolive for many years. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Rhode Island in 1939, and her Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1954. Esther loved to read, and continued to do so up until the last years of her life. She enjoyed many good retirement years, and had been active at the Mansfield Seniors Center and president there for six years. She had been a resident of the Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation for the last several years, where the staff took wonderful care of her and treated her like family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday July 8th at 9:00am at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic prior to her 10:00am Funeral Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel, North Eagleville Rd., Storrs.
