Endel Raiem Obituary
Endel “Isa” Raiem, 97 1/2, of Willimantic, CT passed away at home on June 25, 2021. He was born December 13, 1923 in Estonia to Eduard and Leontine (Roos) Valter.
On November 28, 1945, Endel and Eniar (Vahtrik) were married. While living in Estonia, they experienced many years of foreign occupation and a war-torn environment. After lining up a job, a home, and a sponsorship, they were fortunate to move to the US in the 1940’s. Some of Endel’s jobs after he and his wife moved to the US were the Thread Mill where he swept floors and was eventually promoted to fix the broken machines after passing a certification correspondence course. Newtown Electronics Company in Manchester; Control Circuits in Middletown; Rogers Corp. where he worked as an efficiency engineer. Endel would travel to companies in other states and other countries to make their assembly lines more efficient. While working at Rogers Corp, his employers had him take a test that showed his intellect was far superior than his sixth-grade education would suggest. Endel was very mechanically minded. He was an inventor and a problem solver. An avid gardener, pickle maker, and chocolatier. Endel loved fishing, making jewelry, rock tumbling, gemstones, and fixing watches. He was a fabulous photographer, grilled the absolute best T-bone steaks, and a perogies champion. Endel was generous, patient, kind, a jokester, sharp-minded, and very stubborn. He would sometimes sing Estonian songs to his family.
Endel is survived by a son, Enn Raiem; granddaughter, Kelly Shepherd; godson, Margus Laan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Endel's name to the Garden Club of Windham, Attn Pamela Wright, Box 773, Willimantic, CT 06226, or to the CT Estonian Society c/o 3 Russell Street, Wallingford CT 06492. For an online memorial guestbook please visit
