Elza Kozlovskis

January 9, 1920 — January 2, 2016

Elza (Morbergs) Kozlovskis, of Willimantic, our beloved mother, grandmother (Oma, as she was best known by) and great-grandmother, left her earthly family on January 2, 2016 one week shy of her 96th birthday. She was born in Jelgava, Latvia on January 9, 1920 to the late Fricis and Emilija (Grasmanis) Morbergs. She was married to Victor Kozlovskis for 44 years until his death in 1983. With the impending communist takeover of Latvia following WWII, they left for Germany in 1945, where their only daughter was born. Having received sponsorship by the Danish Lutheran Church in Tyler, Minnesota they immigrated to the United States in 1951. In 1952 they moved to Willimantic to be with the larger Latvian community. Elza was a lifelong member of the Latvian Lutheran Church in Willimantic. She worked at the American Thread Co. and the Electro Motive Co. before taking classes to become a data entry operator in 1968. She went to work for the Motor Vehicle Dept. in Wethersfield and then worked at UConn until her retirement at age 62. Oma was a wonderful baker making Latvian "piragi" and "piparkuks" and her famous apple cake, for her family, right up to her death. She leaves her daughter, Ligita Hanka Giacopassi and son-in-law Paul; grandson, Erik Hanka and wife, Ingrid; granddaughter, Laira Hanka Rehbein and husband Mathew. She also leaves the lights of her heart, great grandchildren, Noah Hanka and Brielle Rehbein, and also Scott Hanka who was like a great grandson. She was predeceased by two sisters, Lonija Rozentals and Emilija Morbergs. Elza's family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, January 7, 2016 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic. Her funeral service will be held Friday, January 8, 2016 at 11:00am at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 96 Oak St. Willimantic, with burial to follow at New Willimantic, Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to her favorite organization, Occupation Museum of Latvia at "OMFA, c/o Ilze Resnis, 10930 Nollwood Dr., Chardon, OH 44024."
