Obituary

Elsie (Loomis) Herrick, 89, of Storrs, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 18, 2026, after an amazing life filled with joy and love.

Elsie was born on December 28th, 1936, to Mary (Bartholomew) and Robert B. Loomis, Sr. in Storrs, CT.

Elsie graduated from Windham High School in 1954, and went to work for Aetna in Farmington before working for The State of Connecticut on UConn Campus, followed by the Mansfield Training School campus in Storrs.

Elsie is predeceased by her husband, Ernest N. Herrick, Jr., whom she was happily married to from June 25th 1960, until his passing on January 22nd, 2022.

Elsie and "Ernie" had two children together; their son Scott A. Herrick who passed away in 2011 at the age of 42, and daughter Candace (Herrick) (Chamberlain) of Chicopee MA.

After leaving the workforce to become a stay-at-home mom for 10 years, Elsie restarted her career at Mansfield Public School System Food services, a job she very much enjoyed. She often remembered students fondly for many years after they graduated. Elsie then went on to return to office work, eventually getting back to the State of Connecticut, working in DOT until her retirement.

Through all of these years, Elsie volunteered much of her time to the Women's Auxiliary of the Eagleville (Mansfield) Fire Department. Elsie was an original member who worked tirelessly to support the fireman during active calls. She also loved assisting at the many functions and fundraisers such as Fireman's Dinners, Craft fairs, Quilting, and Holiday Bazaars. She made many lifelong friends over the years, often laughing and smiling while working to make delicious meals to serve the community.

In addition to her parents, husband, and son, Elsie was predeceased by her three siblings. Robert Loomis, Jr. And Christine (Loomis) Legace, both of Willimantic, and Virginia Loomis of Storrs. She also leaves behind her daughter and son-in law, Candace and Phil Nadeau of Chicopee MA, her granddaughter Lynda (Chamberlain) Best and husband Ryan Best, and three great-grandchildren Sophia, Bode, and Phoebe all of Middletown CT. Elsie had three very close friends, Claire Kaminski, who has been like a sister to her, and Pat Walmsley and Diane Kukucka, all of Windham CT. She also leaves her close friend Chip Jordan, of Storrs, her sister-in-law Sharon (Racicott) Loomis , and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, both organizations Elsie felt strongly about supporting.
