Elmer Fischer Obituary
Elmer M. Fischer, Lieutenant Commander, United States Navy, passed away peacefully at his beloved Anchorage Farm in Lebanon, CT, on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at the age of 101.
Elmer was born March 7, 1921, in Bristol, PA, to Emma L. and Frank W. Fischer. He grew up in Peekskill, NY, with his older sister and three younger brothers. At an early age, his parents instilled in Elmer the value of duty, hard work, and honesty, which remained pillars throughout his life.
Elmer attended Pratt Institute School of Science and Technology in Brooklyn, NY, graduating in 1943 with a BS in mechanical engineering. In the midst of World War II and with a strong sense of patriotism, Elmer enlisted as a seaman in the U.S. Navy and obtained his commission as ensign in 1944, beginning a 21-year naval career. Elmer served in both World War II and the Korean War as a commanding officer, engineering officer, and weapons officer aboard U.S. Atlantic and Pacific Fleet ships and with amphibious forces. Highlights of his military career included an assignment to the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project and Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in Albuquerque and Los Alamos, NM, where he worked on nuclear weapons research and development, and an assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, where he was an officer instructor in marine engineering. After completing his naval career, Elmer worked in various engineering-related managerial positions at Electric Boat and United Technologies until his retirement in 1986.
Elmer met the love of his life, Dorothea “Dolle” B. Barto, on a blind date, and he proposed after only six dates. They married on July 9, 1949, and over the next seven years and four coast-to-coast moves, they had five children. In later years, Elmer would remark that his children were his greatest accomplishment in life, and he was immensely proud of their achievements.
Elmer and his family moved to Lebanon, CT, in 1964, and Elmer was active in the community for the next 50 years. He belonged to the American Legion, the Lebanon Historical Society, the Lebanon Board of Education Building Committee, and the Troop Committee for Lebanon’s Boy Scout Troop 58. He was a long-time member of The First Congregational Church of Lebanon and served as its head usher for 20 years.
Elmer enjoyed working around his Lebanon farm, tinkering with cars and equipment, and fixing anything that needed repair. He often traveled with Dolle to visit family and friends, and he supported her on countless adventures with the children. In addition to making Dolle’s and his children’s busy lives possible, he assumed the demanding role of caregiver to several family members. Elmer will be fondly remembered for his deep dedication and devotion to his family, country, community, and church.
Elmer was predeceased by his beloved wife of 68 years, Dorothea “Dolle” B. Fischer. Elmer leaves behind his five children: Frank Fischer (Eugene, OR), Paul Fischer (Appling, GA), Sally Coren (Lebanon, CT), Judy Mudd (Crozet, VA), and Ted Fischer (Lebanon, CT); brother Charles Fischer (Nescopeck, PA); twelve grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:30am on Friday, December 30, 2022 at the New Lebanon Cemetery on Waterman Road. A memorial service will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at The First Congregational Church of Lebanon, with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. Family and friends are welcome to both the graveside and memorial services.
