Elizabeth Brunner Green

September 17, 1926 — February 19, 2011

Elizabeth B. Green Elizabeth "Bim" B. Green (Brunner), 84, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and active, engaged citizen, died peacefully on February 19, 2011 at Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Mansfield, Connecticut. "If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; Yours is the world and everything that's in it." Born in Reading on September 17, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Keely and Alice (Geissler) Brunner. She graduated as an honor student from Reading High School, graduated first in her class from the McCann School of Business and attended the University of Pennsylvania for two years. She left to marry her high school sweetheart, James (Jim) H. Green the day after he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy on June 4, 1949. Jim's career brought them to Ankara, Istanbul, Rome, and Brussels. While there, Elizabeth learned to speak Turkish, Italian and French fluently. She founded, and served as the first president of the Turkish-American Women's Club of Istanbul. Beth was chair of American Community Charity Balls in both Istanbul and Brussels. "Succeed and give and it helps you live... " She brought back from Europe classic culinary skills, sharing them with enthusiasm. Her musical ear shone in her great harmonizing ability and her love of poetic verse. "Beside the lake, beneath the trees, fluttering and dancing in the breeze, My heart with pleasure fills and dances with the daffodils." Beth moved back to Reading in 1975 where she was a co-founder of Reading's first Historic Preservation District. She derived great pleasure in making such an important and lasting contribution to the city where she was born and raised. She then pursued a successful career in real estate from 1978 until her retirement in 1992. Elizabeth is survived by her former husband, James H., Atlanta, Georgia; her brother, Keely S. Brunner Jr., Boulder, Colorado; her two sons, James, Lubbock, Texas; and John and his wife, Jennifer, Willimantic, Connecticut; her granddaughter Anna, Madison, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews. Her two sisters, Joanne Kurtz and Beatrice Seltzer, both of Reading, predeceased her. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
