Eleanor Orlomoski Obituary
Eleanor Mae (Hart) Orlomoski

It is with great sadness that the family of Eleanor Orlomoski announces her passing on December 7, 2024 at the age of 88.

Eleanor was born at her grandparents’ home in Canterbury on June 14, 1936.  She was one of seven children born to Charles and Hilda (Collin) Hart.  With the exception of just a few short months, Eleanor lived in and loved her entire life in her hometown.  She attended several of the town’s one-room schoolhouses and later in life, played a large role in the preservation of Canterbury’s Green (Centre) Schoolhouse and was proud to speak to groups of children about what it was like to have been a pupil there during the War Years.  After graduating from Griswold High School in 1954, she joined the workforce.  That year, while working as a gas station attendant at Swan’s Garage (now Bergeron’s Garage), she met Alton Orlomoski.  They fell in love, married in 1955, and in 1956, began to build their home on the hill across the road from the gas station.  There, over the course of their long marriage, they worked hard to turn the original 20’ x 20’ ‘shack’ into a home, raised three children and built an additional house on the property for Alton’s mother.  All the while, Eleanor worked a variety of jobs, to include; delivering the Hartford Times, bookkeeping for two local dairies, and ultimately, becoming a US Postal Service mail carrier in Canterbury.  After retiring from the Post Office in 1992 with 30 years of service, Eleanor spent hours in her many flower gardens, enjoyed traveling with Alton and their friends, playing Bingo at Foxwoods with her sister Marjorie and friends, knitting, building hundreds of puzzles, and volunteering countless hours in support of the Canterbury Historical Society.  Eleanor was the ‘brains’ behind many of her family’s construction projects, planning and designing several major additions on their home and their sons’, as well.  She also loved decorating for the holidays and her rustic and lighted Santa and reindeer on their front lawn always stood out on the hill during the Christmas season.

Eleanor is predeceased by her parents, Charles and Hilda Hart and three brothers: Robert, Arthur, and William.  She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Alton Orlomoski, son Steven and wife, Bobbi (Lussier) Orlomoski of Canterbury, son David and wife Robin (Sherman) Orlomoski of Barkhamsted, CT, and daughter Amy Orlomoski of Canterbury, grandchildren, Caitlyn and Rachel Orlomoski, and Daniel and wife, Molly Cyr, and Zachary Cyr.  She is also survived by brother Kenneth Hart and wife, Kathleen, sisters Marjorie Orlomoski, and Nancy Allyn, and many nieces and nephews.

Eleanor will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her across Canterbury and beyond.  A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at the First Congregational Church of Canterbury, 6 South Canterbury Road on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 11:00am.   Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Eleanor’s memory to the Canterbury Historical Society, P.O. Box #2, Canterbury, CT  06331.
