Edwin B. "Ted" Shaw

Edwin B. Shaw Jr. Lifelong Area Resident; American Thread General Manager Edwin B. Shaw Jr. "Ted", 86, of Waterford, husband of Helen (Smith) Shaw, died Wednesday March 27, 2013. He was born Jan. 11, 1927 in Willimantic, the son of E. Burton and Emily (Waring) Shaw. He attended Windham schools and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Jan. 1944. Ted served in the Pacific as a Gunner's Mate, aboard the submarine U.S.S. Bumper, SS 333 until May 1946. During this period, the U.S.S. Bumper earned several citations including the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with star, and the Submarine Combat Insignia. He was employed for 37 years by the former American Thread Company in Willimantic, CT., in various supervisory positions, retiring in 1985 when the mill in Willimantic closed. He was active in various civic organizations and was a past trustee of The Windham Community Memorial Hospital and associate director of the former Connecticut Bank and Trust Company. Ted was dedicated to his family and followed his interests throughout his life to include boating, fishing, gardening and woodworking. He crafted many fine pieces of furniture which will be proudly passed through the generations. In his youth he could often be found fishing in the local rivers and streams using the flies that he learned to tie. A man of uncompromised principles, Ted instilled honor and pride in his family. He will be greatly missed. In addition to his wife of 67 years, he is survived by 3 sons, Michael T. Shaw and his wife Robin of St. Louis, MO, Mark B. Shaw and his wife Elizabeth of East Lyme, CT and David M. Shaw of Hamden, CT; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. His family will receive relatives and friends on Monday April 1, 2013 between 6:00 and 8:00pm at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00am at St. John's Episcopal Church, 400 Main St. Niantic, CT. Interment will follow in New Willimantic Cemetery, West Main St. (Rte.32 at the intersection of Rte. 6) Willimantic at 11:45am. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorial donations to St. John's Episcopal Church, 400 Main St., Niantic, CT. 06357 or to Windham Hospital Foundation, 112 Mansfield Ave., Willimantic, CT. 06226.
