Douglas Murphy Sr. Obituary
Douglas Corrigan Murphy Sr., 85, of Willimantic, CT passed away peacefully on May 15th, 2024. He was born on September 26, 1938, to the late Thomas and Susan Murphy, also of Willimantic, and was one of nine children. He graduated from Windham High School in 1957, then married the love of his life Judith with whom he celebrated over 63 years of marriage.
Doug’s priority in life was his family that he loved deeply. As a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he and his wife Judith created many memories to share as the entire family grew up. Watching football with his 3 sons on Sundays, playing cards on a Friday night with family and friends, carving pumpkins on Halloween with his grandchildren, and hosting craft events with his great grandchildren are just a few of the joys he experienced. He was a fan of UConn Men’s & Women’s basketball as well as watching professional golf. Doug had many affiliations in Willimantic, most notably as the Advertising Director of the Chronicle where he worked for many years. He and his wife owned a Jewelry/Gift Store “DC Murphy’s” on Main Street, Willimantic that served the community until 1986. He finished his career working for the local Chamber of Commerce as the Marketing Director.
He is survived by his wife and life partner of 65 years Judith Murphy, his 3 sons Douglas Murphy Jr. (Darlene), Steven Murphy Sr. (Carole), and Jonathan Murphy (Kelly); grandchildren Douglas Murphy III (Jaime), Kaitlyn Murphy-Keplesky (David), Steven Murphy Jr. (Nicole), and Ryan Murphy (Gisel); great grandchildren Madison, Natalia, Antonio, & Steven III. He also leaves behind his brother Dan Murphy and wife Renee, and many nieces & nephews.
Calling hours will take place at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson Street, Willimantic on May 29th from 9-11am with a service to begin at 10:30am. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
