It is with great sadness that we share Dorothy Miles Shaw died at home in Mansfield on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 following a long illness. Her abounding love for others, her fierce commitment to fight for what she believed in, and the way she made each and every person that walked through her door feel welcome, will never be forgotten. She was cultured, well-traveled, spirited, and wise. She was honest. She was a giver. She made you feel your potential was endless. She was a friend, a wife, a mother, a grandmother and great grandmother. She was devoted to her family and was generous with her love and her time. Dot was born in Flushing, Queens, New York, January 4, 1936, to Catherine and Wilbur Miles. She was one of ten brothers and sisters. After her marriage to Bob in 1957, she lived in Alabama, Tennessee, Minnesota, California, and New York State, before settling in Mansfield Center in 1975. She was the Mansfield Democratic Registrar of Voters for many years and loved her involvement in politics, which included attending the Democratic National Convention twice and the Presidential Inauguration in 1997. She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, Bob, her son Jeff, daughter Dana, and son Dylan, daughters in law Mary and Anduin. She is also survived by her grandchildren Tara, Maggie, Duncan, Kelsey, Shaylyn, Cormac, and Harper, and her great grandchildren Camryn, Carson, and Griffin. Her sisters Jane and Flo, and brothers Bill and Frankie, also survive her. We will forever hold our memories of her close to our hearts. Memorial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Eastern Connecticut, 34 Ledgebrook Drive, Mansfield, CT 06250. For an online memorial guestbook, please visit
