Dorothy Ayres Holt

Dorothy Ayres Holt, 95, of Manchester, CT, and formerly of Hampton, CT, died on September 17, 2004 at the Manchester Memorial Hospital. The daughter of the late Chester T. Ayres and Katharine Scott Ayres Porter, she was born on May 31, 1909 in Montclair, New Jersey and attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She was predeceased by her husband, John Eliot Holt, who died in 1977. She is survived by her son, Hamilton Bowen Holt, II and his wife, Katherine Kinney Holt, of Mansfield Center, and two grandchildren, George Chandler Holt, III and Kyle Holt Hopkins, and three great-grand children, Colin Tuckerman Holt, Eliza Ayres Hopkins and Abigail Calnen Hopkins. Shortly after her marriage she lived in Geneva, Switzerland where her husband was General Manager of IBM-Europe from 1934 to 1940. She and her family left Geneva at of the start of World War II and lived briefly in Rochester, NY, after which her husband left IBM to join a brother-in-law in a manufacturing business in Connecticut. The family settled in Hampton, CT in 1941 and she resided there until moving to Manchester, CT in 1991. Throughout her life she maintained close ties with her Kentucky heritage as part owner, with cousins, of her mother's family home in Versailles, KY. She regularly visited that Kentucky home until it was sold. She was active in leadership positions in numerous organizations, boards and committees in the Hampton/Windham area. Chief among these was the Hampton Congregational Church where she was most visible as the choir director, but she contributed to the organization in countless ways. She was a long-time Director of the Windham Community Memorial Hospital and was a past President of the WCMH Auxiliary. She held every office existing at The Little River Grange and is best remembered as the long-time head of the Juvenile Grange. She was very active in local politics and served for many years as Chairperson of the Republican Town Committee of Hampton. She was a member of the D.A.R. and was a recipient of Eastern Connecticut State University's Presidential Award. There were many, many other positions. She went through life with boundless energy, intelligence and good humor and was known by her many good friends as "The White Tornado".
