Doris Scammon Obituary
Surrounded by much love, Doris L. (Hustus) Scammon, 101, of North Windham, Connecticut was tenderly called home to Heaven on Friday, January 5, 2024.
Born on November 8, 1922, in Searsport, Maine to Josephine (Tozier) and George Hustus, her arrival was welcomed by her six older siblings. It wasn’t long before she too, had the joy of welcoming 14 younger siblings into the family.
At the age of five her mother passed away. Although it was a very difficult time for Doris, she was blessed with another mother, Clara (Ward) Hustus. Clara adored her and raised her like her own along with Doris’ father. Growing up she was always surrounded by family, whom she cherished and loved so dearly.
She was athletic as a teen and enjoyed being on the basketball team while attending high school. After graduating, she married Ralph Abbott and had her four children.
In 1963, Doris moved herself and her two boys to North Windham, Connecticut. She worked at American Thread and later Brand Rex where she retired from at the age of 65. After raising her boys, she married Richard Scammon. They attended church regularly as this was one of her biggest passions. She loved to go to prayer meetings and was actively involved with the woman’s ministry team. She also loved to participate in church functions outside of the church walls. She was an adventurist and would happily join a mission’s team and was even willing to venture out of the country. She served as a loving member of Christian Life Assembly of God right up until her passing.
Because she loved her family deeply, she would never think of missing the annual family reunion held in her home state. As she got older, she loved to sit in her recliner and knit or crochet. She enjoyed playing games of SKIP-BO with all who were willing to challenge her. One of her favorite daily activities was having her son Carleton take her out promptly at two o’clock for her afternoon latte followed by a joy ride around town often with no intended destination. She was always happy to go.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard Scammon; son, Carleton Abbott; son-in-law, Norman Prentice; grandchildren, Deborah Kawa, Raymond Abbott Jr., and Amy (Abbott) Manseau; 8 sisters and 5 brothers, all of whom she loved dearly.
She is survived by daughters Carlene Prentice of Eastford, Connecticut and Donna Kawa of Brevard, North Carolina; son, Raymond Abbott and wife Gale of North Windham, Connecticut; Grandchildren, Lori Cote, Nathan Kawa, Mark Kawa and Heather Martin; 15 great grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; four sisters, three brothers and countless nieces and nephews. Again, all of whom she loved dearly.
Doris eagerly awaited this time of transition, and leaves behind a great legacy. We as her family are humbled and honored to have been part of a life so well lived. She was the pillar in our family. She will be greatly missed by her immediate family as well as so many others that we can’t begin to number. She was a beloved Mama, Grammie, Mimi, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was truly an amazing woman loved by all those whose lives she touched so deeply. Indeed, she has heard the words, “Well done, Doris”.
A celebration of her life will be held at Christian Life Assembly, 143 Windham Road, Willimantic, Connecticut on Thursday, January 11, 2024. A viewing will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. The service will begin at 11:00 a.m. A committal will immediately follow at the New Willimantic Cemetery.
