Donald Sayers Obituary
Donald Patrick Sayers passed away at the age of 91 on October 15, 2024 at Hartford Hospital.
Son of the late Francis and Helen Sayers, Don was born on November 22, 1932 in Willimantic. He attended St. Joseph School and graduated from Windham High School (1951) and Willimantic State Teachers College (1955) where he played varsity basketball. On June 30, 1956, Don married Janet Daniels. He served in the United States Army from 1956-1958 before continuing his teaching career. An enthusiastic teacher in the Coventry, CT school system, he finished his 37 year career at Capt. Nathan Hale School. An avid sports fan, Don spent many years coaching Saturday morning basketball and baseball teams in Coventry and Willimantic. He cheered on his favorite local teams but mostly enjoyed watching his children play their chosen sports. After retirement, Don and Janet enjoyed traveling and found joy spending time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, daughters Jane (John) Houston of Worcester, MA and Christine (Mike) of Columbia, CT and son, Kevin (Darlene) of Bloomfield,NJ; grandchildren Joey, Molly, David (Natasha) Houston, Ava, Kailyn, Rylie, and Sean Sayers; great grandchildren Ali, David, Jr., and Liam Houston; sisters-in-law Barbara and Martha and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Arlene, brothers Francis, James, William, and Thomas and his beloved son, Daniel.
There are no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery for immediate family only.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that a memorial donation be made to Covenant Soup Kitchen in Willimantic, CT, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Corpus Christi Parish School Building Committee in Willimantic, CT.
