Cover for Derek W. Hearn's Obituary

Derek W. Hearn

October 2, 1989 — December 17, 2025

Derek Hearn died on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, from a sudden illness. He was thirty-six years old.

Born in St. Charles, Illinois, Derek grew up in New Hartford and Pomfret Center, Connecticut. A graduate of the Woodstock Academy, he earned recognition early on for his work in graphic arts, designing album covers for local bands and tattoos for friends. For years, he worked as a professional landscaper, a job that allowed him to stay close to the outdoors he loved while utilizing his eye for design.

In nearly every facet of his life, Derek had an affinity for creating something from nothing. His creativity flourished in the kitchen, where he could open an empty pantry and create an amazing meal. Often the funniest person in the room, Derek always found the specific, strange detail that made an arduous situation absurd and suddenly bearable. While he was generous and empathetic, he never announced it; he just showed up, paid attention, and helped. Animals, too, were disarmed by his gentleness. A true dog whisperer, Derek could calm even the most anxious or volatile dogs just by being near them.

Strong, humble and compassionate, Derek enjoyed music, spending time with dogs and hiking with friends.

He was an organ donor, a choice that reflected the way he lived: charitable without fanfare, giving part of himself to others.

Derek will be deeply missed by family, including his parents, James Edwin and Karyn (Genes) Hearn; his older brother, Nick, and sister-in-law, Kim Hearn; sister, Liana Hearn; younger brother, Dylan Hearn; and his cherished partner, Jessica Arrington, and her children.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James and Janice V. Genes and Edwin D. and Juanita M. Hearn.

In lieu of flowers, Derek's family requests that all donations be directed to Wings of Freedom Animal Rescue, a southern New England animal rescue, or a rescue organization of the donor’s choice.
