Dennis E. Harvey

Dennis Harvey, 71, of Columbia CT, died Sunday, June 15, 2014 at Hartford Hospital. He was born to the late Merton L. Harvey and Alice (Demers) Harvey on May 17, 1943 in Webster, MA. Dennis graduated from Eastern Connecticut University and taught Science and Math for 37 years at Horace W. Porter School where he was affectionately known by three generations of Columbia students as "Harv". Through his years at Porter he also coached the boy's and girl's basketball teams and the girl's softball teams. After retirement, he enjoyed meeting people through his part-time work at Columbia Ford. Dennis is survived by his wife Candace Harvey, his son Todd Harvey (partner Karim), daughter Tracy Doherty (husband Kenny) and grand daughters Haley and Emma Paulhus, as well as his brother Merton and Joan Harvey, and numerous nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his parents, also his daughter Carrie Harvey and sister Sandra Wilson. He greatly enjoyed his winters in Florida, loved to play golf and spend time relaxing at the beach. Always the "life of the party", he loved spending time with family and friends. In his later years, his greatest enjoyment was the time he spent with his grand daughters, watching them grow and helping shape their futures. The family has established the Dennis Harvey Memorial Gift for Math and Science at Horace W. Porter School. Donations should be sent in his name to Horace W. Porter at P.O. Box 166, Columbia, CT 06237. His family will received relatives and friends on Thursday June 19, 2014 between 5:00 and 8:00pm at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic.
